Middle School Leadership
Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders
VREC actively invests in empowering young people to lead, share, and thrive through a variety of hands-on programs. Our long-standing Student-Led Mini Grant Program exemplifies this commitment by centering student voice, initiative, and real-world impact. Over the past seven years, we have significantly expanded leadership-building opportunities for middle school students, and in 2026 we plan to continue this momentum by engaging both younger and older learners.
2026 8TH GRADE TRANSITION and LEADERSHIP DAYS at the NorthWoods Stewardship Center
In May of 2026, VREC once again provided 8th grade students from across the region the opportunity to reflect upon their upcoming transition to high school. The education team at NorthWoods worked with students in making connections to transitions in the natural world, and understanding the importance of supporting each other through transition, while navigating challenges on the low ropes course. Maria Young, NorthWoods Executive Director, and VREC Executive Director John Castle teamed up to encourage students to think about watersheds in the natural world and connect to “watershed events” in history and their own lives. Students learned about the “tools” they can use to assist in navigating both the planned and the unexpected changes they might encounter in their lives.
Over 150 students from nine VREC schools participated over four days. Despite some cool and rainy weather, students learned more about the natural world, met students from other schools, and came away with tools in their “change and transitions toolbox.” The 8th grade classes participating in 2026 were from Albany Community School, Barnet School, Brighton Elementary School, Burke Town School, Canaan School, Coventry Village School, Danville School, St. Johnsbury School, and Twinfield School.
