VREC provides a wide array of professional development opportunities for educators in person and online in the NEK. Our goal is to be responsive to the field as such offerings spring from needs and interests expressed by superintendents, curriculum directors, principals and teachers directly.

STEAM Integration Fellowship Success!

This professional learning experience, led by Lucie deLabruere, was held in Newport from July 13–17, 2026.

Upper elementary and middle school educators from VREC member schools participated in an immersive, hands-on STEAM camp alongside 5th and 6th grade students.

The camp allowed teachers to build confidence with creative technology while developing practical strategies for authentic STEAM integration in their own classrooms.

What Teachers Experienced:

✓ A $500 professional development honorarium

✓ Observed student-centered, project-based learning in action

✓ Built technical skills with Micro:bit, Makey Makey, Scratch, and fabrication (cardboard cutters, laser cutters, electronic cutters)

✓ Created their own projects alongside students

✓ Collaborated with the lead instructor and fellow educators

✓ Developed their your own integrated STEAM-based experience for their learning space
