OGAP is based on the mathematics education research on how students learn specific mathematics concepts reflected in OGAP Frameworks/Learning Trajectories. There is accumulating evidence that knowledge and instructional use of learning trajectories positively impacts instructional decision-making, task and instructional activity selection, understanding of evidence in student work, and student motivation and achievement in mathematics. (Carpenter et al, 1989; Clements et al, 2011; Wilson, 2009; Clark, B., 2004; Clarke et al, 2001; Fennema et al, 1996; Supovitz et al, 2018).

Learning progressions coupled with formative assessment, with its strong research base for positively impacting student achievement, together have the potential to provide teachers with a research-based lens to review and understand student work and thinking, make instructional decisions, and provide meaningful feedback to students (Heritage, 2008). OGAP Frameworks/Learning Progressions communicate mathematics education research for additive reasoning, multiplicative reasoning, fractions, and ratios and proportions, at a grain size that allows teachers to incorporate instructional actions into their practice.

The initial four days of professional development focuses on mathematics content (e.g., fractions), mathematics education research on how students develop understanding and fluency, common errors students make or pre-conceptions that may interfere with students learning new concepts or solving related problems. The professional development is designed to help teachers acquire the knowledge and skills to make instructional decisions based on evidence of student thinking and understanding of OGAP learning trajectories.
